It was the second time foreign guest had arrived in our school this year. This time they were the participants of the project “Think critically, live rationally and empathically” realised within the programme Erasmus+.

Our guests arrived from different parts of the world: Istanbul (Turkey), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Chiety (Italy). They came on Sunday, 19th May 2019. It was the first meeting of all the participants of the project. The topic of the activities planned in Nowa Sól was broadly understood immigration.

The project activities started on the next day after the guests were welcomed by the head teacher of the school Mrs Alexandra Grzadko. Then, there was the tour of the school and integration games. Next, we started implementing the project assumptions quite seriously.

In the afternoon, we explored the city. The guests admired our attractions, such as the city centre, the port, Dwarf Park and Physics Park where everybody had much fun conducting various physical experiments. In the evening the guests spent a pleasant time with the hosts at an integration party in one of the local pizza places.

Tuesday started from visiting City President Mr Wadim Tyszkiewicz who greeted everybody warmly and told about the history of Nowa Sól, its development and the current economic situation. The visit finished with a traditional photo session with the President on the stairs of Town Hall.

At school the students were divided into international groups and they continued working on the project. Every group made a presentation on the situation of the immigrants in their countries. We watched the multimedia presentations and interviews with the immigrants recorded in each country. After the discussion, everybody went to the port where the ship “Laguna” was waiting for us. The cruise along the River Oder was sponsored by Mr Andrzej Dela, a Nowa Sól County councillor. The River Oder, viewed from the ship, looked extremely interesting and everybody enjoyed the trip.

We spent the afternoon presenting the guests Polish holidays, customs and traditions, history of Poland and famous Poles. Everybody knew John Paul II and Copernicus, as well as Marie Curie although not everybody associated her with our country. That is interesting, our guests knew Polish sportsmen very well  Lewandowski, Piątek, Gortat were the people who didn not need to be introduced  The teachers also mentioned Kieślowski, Polański and Kasia Smutniak.

Our guests were enormously impressed by the presentation of Polish cuisine supported by such specialties as pickled cucumbers, Silesian noodles, red cabbage, beef roulades, Polish bread, cheese cake and doughnuts (to show the tradition of the so called Fat Thursday, the last Thursday of carnival). Moreover, Easter decorations inspired great curiosity – palms, painted Easter eggs and Easter baskets. Everybody was in good mood saying good-bye that evening.

On the next day, we met by the bus which took us Wrocław. In Wrocław, we visited the exhibition “1000 years of Wrocław”, ate a delicious dinner and explored the city centre by means of the city game prepared by our teachers, which was fun. The additional attraction appeared to be The Midsummer Fair (Jarmark Świetojanski) which was taking place on the Market Square at that time. We also had a meeting in the office of NGO “Normada” which supports immigrants. The students got a lot of information about the forms of help, problems, the life of immigrants in Wrocław and the surrounding area. Wrocław is the city where the biggest group of immigrants live in Poland. That is why such information was essential for us.

We spent Thursday in Rogoźnica, in a former concentration camp Gross-Rosen. It was a very difficult history lesson for us and our guests. That visit showed everybody where hatred, lack of tolerance, haughtiness and disdain led to. We saw awful living and working conditions in the camp. On the programme there was also a film in which the former prisoners of the camp told about the hardships of life and ways to survive in Gross-Rosen.

On Friday, after numerous discussions, we hold the debate on the topic „Should we accept/ receive immigrants?” During the debate, the representatives of all the countries put forward advantages and disadvantages of the stay of immigrants in the host country. After the summarising of the debate, all the project participants expressed their opinion by voting, which showed that immigrants should be accepted. The debate was filmed. During the work on the debate, County Executive Mrs Iwona Brzozowska visited us.

After finishing all the project activities, the solemn ending of the project “Think critically, live rationally and empathically” took place. The head teacher Mrs Aleksandra Grządko gave certificates to all the project participants.

In the afternoon, we spent time walking together, playing bowling, etc.

After a cordial farewell, the Lithuanian guests set off on a journey home on Friday night. The others got up in the early morning to depart in the opposite directions. Saying goodbye was very moving. Everybody promised to meet in Chieti in the autumn.

Summarising the stay of the guests in our school and in our city, we want to declair that we may be proud. The guests were amazed by Polish heartiness, hospitality, taste of Polish dishes and the beauty of Polish cities. Everybody was satisfied with the fact that all the participants were able to speak English, which made it easy for the participants to communicate. We are still getting words of sympathy from our guests who express contentment with the stay in Poland.

Italy, Chieti (from 12th to 19th October 2019) – another mobility in Erasmus + project.

On early Sunday morning, a group from Turkey was the first to land at the Rome airport, followed by a group from Poland. While waiting for the friends from Lithuania, both groups spent the afternoon in Rome in the EUR district (Esposizione Universale Roma), whose history dates back to the 1930s. There is The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (the Palace of Italian Civilization) also known as Colesseo Quadrato (the Square Colosseum), which was built to show the power and might of Mussolini. It is currently leased to the Italian leather company FENDI as an exhibition centre. We also admired The Convention Center and “The Cloud”.

In the late afternoon, all together, tired but in good mood, we set off to Chieti to meet our Italian colleagues. Five kilometres before Chieti, our bus broke down. We had to change to the next one, unfortunately, without our luggage, because the trunks could not be opened. Luckily, our suitcases reached Chieti shortly after us. Our Italian friends, together with their families and friends, joyfully welcomed us and invited for delicious Italian dinners to their homes.

On Monday morning, an Italian breakfast surprised us with its sweetness and typical strong coffee. At 9 a.m. we met at school. We started the project work with the presentations of all the partner schools. Then the hosts presented a fragment of a fashion show based on clothes from different periods of the history of their region. The costumes were prepared by students as part of their classes and apprenticeships. The day before, they presented the entire collection in Venice.

After the show, we started the project work. The representatives of each team presented their projects on democracy, human rights and compliance with them in particular countries. It was an introduction to the stormy discussion on respect of human rights in the world and our participation in it. Then we walked around the school and saw fashion workshops, electronic and mechatronic laboratories.

We went up the hill by trolleybus. The historical part of the city is located there and there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area. We ate lunch at the best restaurant in town. We had the opportunity to try typical Italian food: risotto Milanese. We spent the afternoon exploring the historical part of Chieti, the Marrucino theatre, Cattedrale di San Giustino (The Cathedral of Saint Justin), Sacro Monte dei Morti, where every Good Friday a festive procession takes place, which is considered one of the oldest processions in Italy.

We also met with the Mayor of the city to talk about democracy, human rights, their observance, social problems as well as the Mayor’s activities and experiences in this issue. We spent the evening in a friendly and warm Italian atmosphere.

We began Tuesday with a presentation of our research on human rights violations. Then, in international teams, we held discussions on human rights, compliance with them and violations. We found out that because of the fact that we come from different cultures and environments we understand and interpret certain concepts and situations differently. Despite the views that divide us, we stated which rights are the most important to us - freedom is on the first place for everyone.

Then we went to meet the Prefect of the Chieti Province, Mr. Barbato. The students from partner schools presented the project assumptions, their conclusions and observations. They also made presentations on democracy and human rights in their countries. The Prefect told about his work and his tasks, as well as the problems of the local community, the involvement of the province's citizens in social life and his expectations. At the end, a discussion on human rights and civic responsibility ensued. After lunch we visited the Chieti museums: Villa Frigerj and La Civitella. Like many tourists before us, we wondered who the Capestrano warrior was.

Early in the morning on Wednesday we went to Rome on a trip to pursue the way of Roman democracy. We visited Circus Maximus, Colloseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon. To the satisfaction of our beautiful “models”, there was also time for a photo session at the Trevi Fountain and Plaza de Espana. We ended the trip at St. Peter's Square in Vatican. That took place on the 41st anniversary of the election of the Polish Pope.

On Thursday we could slow down a bit. We went to the beautiful castle Castello di Rocca Scalegna, where in addition to the history of the region, we learned the history of the castle, its cruel rulers and the tools of torture they used. We ate lunch in a restaurant on a fishing platform, where we could see what traditional fishing looks like. On the way back we visited Abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere. We said goodbye to the blue waves of the Adriatic Sea looking at it from the hill.

On Friday morning we continued the project work in international teams. The students debated on the involvement of citizens in social life, especially young people. We realized how much we can do, but also how great responsibility lies with us. At the end, each group sang their country's national anthem, and we all sang the European Union's anthem together. The hosts showed us ecological products made by their students: a solar handbag that glows in the dark after opening, a simulation of a wind turbine and a machine for checking the quality of shapes. There was also a fashion show in self-made costumes inspired by the colours of the region and the country. We spent the afternoon talking and shopping together. In the evening there was a farewell party full of Italian delicacies.

On Saturday we set off for home and the beautiful hot Italian sun said good-bye to us.

Italian flavours.

An additional attraction of staying in Italy was learning about Italian cuisine, which is less known in Poland. We were able to try only some Italian dishes, but they are worth mentioning. A typical Abruzzo dish is arrosticini, i.e. skewers of meat, mainly mutton, which we had the chance to taste. An unknown dish was sort of balls made of eggs and cheese cooked in tomato sauce, served warm -pallotte cacio e uova. They were delicious. We also got to know the taste of risotto alla milanese, i.e. rice with Parmesan, butter and saffron. It is not a typical Abruzzo dish, but it was worth trying. There were also ravioli and Italian pizza. Pizza Margherita and Pizza 4 cheese are of course known in Poland as well, but pizza with potatoes, quite often served in Italy, was totally new to us.

A typical Italian sweet breakfast was also a surprise to us.

Nutella was omnipresent. There were also various cakes, croissants, honey and jams on the table. Italians rarely drink tea. They most often enjoy black Italian coffee, a typical espresso, and sweet ferratelle abruzzesi with it.

Virtual mobility in Lithuania

Due to the current epidemiological situation around the world, we postponed the date of our trip to Lithuania a lot of times. After many preparations and online meetings of the teachers, we regretfully decided to implement our meetings online on the theme of discrimination.

Monday, 16th November 2020

We started a virtual tour of Kaunas, which is the second most populous city in Lithuania and the largest industrial centre of this country. We got to know the school, its specific fields of study, exemplary students' work and the artistic atmosphere. We got to know the beauty of Lithuanian nature and monuments, all the time wishing we could be there in person. Watching a movie about Lithuanian culinary specialties, we immediately got hungry. We got to know new dishes unknown in our countries:

- kwas gira - Lithuanian Product of the Year 1998 awarded with a gold medal at the AgroBalt 98 exhibition, the only kwas in Lithuania with a national quality certificate,

- breadsticks with cheese sauce

- cranberry drink (cranberry pap) with a beautiful pink colour

- various types of cheeses served with honey sauce

- kastinys, a kind of sauce served to potatoes and vegetables

and many other delicacies ...

Tuesday, 17th November 2020

On Tuesday, students and teachers met online. Despite the kilometres between us, we saw and heard each other perfectly, almost as well as live. Surprisingly, we had no technical problems with the implementation of this huge undertaking. The students presented the results of their research on the phenomenon of discrimination in their countries. Then we started the debate on discrimination in the modern world. We also considered how to prevent this phenomenon.

Wednesday, 18th November 2020

Another day was spent on hard work. First, we analysed national, local and school anti-discrimination policies. We analysed case studies in our countries. We discussed the variety of forms of discrimination and the effectiveness of the actions taken. We moved our considerations to the Active Citizen forum, discussing how young people can counteract discrimination.

Thursday, 19th November 2020

Students presented the results of the surveys on discrimination conducted in their schools, discussed the different approaches to the problem in each country and the similarity of the results obtained. The Italian school presented the summary of our activities and project considerations in the movie Your War Erasmus. The host of the meeting, the Lithuanian coordinator Mrs. Raminta Gavėnavičienė, finished the activities, addressing the students: "You can change the future..."

Friday, 20th November 2020

It's finally time for pleasure. We started the day with a virtual walk around the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, learning about the rich history of Lithuania and Vilnius. Later, we watched a film about the city of Onikszty (Anykščiai), next to which there were fights during the November and January Uprising, and during the Second World War, the Germans murdered about 1,500 inhabitants for racist reasons. And then we enjoyed the charm of the Birštonas spa town situated on the Nemunas River. Finally, everyone promised to find a recipe for a typical Lithuanian dish on the Internet and prepare it at the weekend
